News Lead Blog

I collected three news leads from different internet sites. I used articles from "ABC," "Fox News," and "NY Post." The ABC article talked about a man fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy outside a Colorado middle school who wants to take legal action. This article used a summary lead. The article started with a summary of the entire post and gave the reader detailed information in the other set of paragraphs. It answers the five Ws of journalism and tells the reader what happened to the victim and why he wants to sue. It does not elaborate on the deputies who committed the crime and the reason for their actions. This lead caught my attention right away after reading the first paragraph. I prefer to read an article with a capturing title and topic sentence.

The Fox news article is informative and reports on Minnesota officials urging ammo factory workers to test kids for lead exposure. This article also has a summary lead. It contains all five W's and details why the Minnesota Department of Health worries about the children. This article answers how children could be exposed to lead dust and details earlier cases of lead dust exposure in children. It does not answer the question of how to prevent exposing children to lead dust. This article is excellent for just wanting a quick summary. It explains everything in the first paragraph and goes into detail in the rest of the article.

The Ny post details a study involving drinking Coke and Pepsi and its effects on testicles. It uses a single-item lead to capture the reader's attention with shock value. This article goes into statistics and their test to determine if Coke and Pepsi cause testicles to become larger. This article could have been more effective like the first two. It didn't capture my attention because the writer needed to give more details in the first paragraph. It was quite repetitive in the rest of the article.
